| 3"-5", with a smooth, patternless olive to dark brown carapace. Plastron is yellow to brown and double-hinged. Head often spotted or mottled, but not striped. Mud turtles are found throughout the southeastern U.S., in fresh or brakish water. Prefers shallow, soft-bottomed slow moving water with lots of vegetation. Although very aquatic, often seen moving terrestrial from one pond to the next. |
