| 36"-82", a large black snake with highly variable back and belly pattern. In Kentucky, some have a faint chainlike dorsal pattern; others have a salt and pepper color pattern. Found throughout the southern U.S. from coast to coast, in a number of subspecies, in a diverse array of habitat types. Active during the day, but nocturnal uring the summer. It is a strong constrictor, specializing on other snakes (hence the name kingsnake) including poisonous ones, as well as rodents, birds, and eggs. |
