Black Walnut

60-90' high, 2-3' diameter, with a straight trunk and broad, open crown.  Leaves are 1-2' long, compound, 15-23 leaflets (leaflets 3-4" long, ovate-lanceleote, finely serrated, yellow green, smooth above and hairy below.  Fruit is globular, 1.5-2" in diameter, solitary or in clusters of 2-3, with a thick, yellow-green husk with soft short haris and a corrugated shell.  Bark is thick, dark brown to black with deep, narrow interlacing furrows.  Fast growing and long lived on moist, fertile soils.
