Yellow (Tulip) Poplar

A large tree, 80-100' high, 4-6' diameter, with a straight trunk.  Leaves are simple, alternate, 4-6"long, 4 lobed resembling a tulip in outline, lobes entire, dark green above, paler below.  Fruit is a lage erect, conelike aggregate of spiral samaras.  Bark is smooth and dark green on younger stems, thick and ash-gray, furrowed with rough, rounded ridges when older.  Typical of most forest sites.
