Sweetgum

Alternate, simple, palmately lobed, star shaped, coarsely serrate with winged branches.  Fruits are spiny balls, multiple group of capsules.  Mature bark has long horizontal ridges and fissures.  "Ridge surface is somewhat shiny."  Bark is corky and soft.  Gets big!  Hammamelideaceae.
