Opposite, petioles form a V, so do leaf scars.  Leaves are sharply 5 lobed, points of terminal lobes parallel.  Keys mature in fall.  Look underneath, typically hairless (tell from Black Maple).  Bark is platy, peels from side to side, medium gray.  Aceraceae.  U-shaped key.
