Bark mostly very smooth andplaty, exfoliating from the base.  one of the five-leaflet hickories (sometimes 7).  Leaflets serrate, alternately pinnately compound.  All hickories have lateral leaves shorter than the terminal ones.  Nuts have a thick husk.  The main difference between a Shagbark Hickory and a Pignut Hickory is the bark.  There are also longer leaves in the Shagbark Hickory.
