| Shrub to medium-sized tree, 20-50' high, 1-2'diameter, with a flat, open crown. Leaves are alternate, simple, oval, aromatic sassafras, three forms of leaves on the same tree, entire, 1 or 3-lobed, 3-6" long, bright green above. Fruit is berry, small, on a bright red, club-shaped stalk. Bark is thick, red-brown, and furrowed on old trunks. Found in poor soils. Get sassafras oil from the roots and bark. |
