Easily distinguished from Shagbark Hickory when bark is compared.  60-70' tall.  5-7 (usually 5) leaflets.  Narrow crown formed from small spreading branches.  Slender branchlets with terminal buds less than one-half inch in length.  The fruit (1"-1.5" long) has a thin shell and a thin hull that is usually not split.  The bark is tight and usually fissured in older tree trunks.
