Flowering Dogwood

All dogwoods have simple opposite leaves (except one species).  Petioles almost meet, but don't touch (don't form a V).  Arcuate venation.  In fall, they have conspicuous, greenish-gray, biscuit shaped buds.  White parts of "flowers" are actually bracts (modified leaf), yellow parts inside are flowers; crucifix story.  New twigs and leaves are characteristically very scaly and green.  Bark is very black and breaks into small, thin plates.
