Alternate, simple, serrate leaves, assymetrical heart.  Buds have two visible scales: 1st covers bud, 2nd covers halfway.  Zigzag twigs with pseudoterminal bud.  Berry attached to leaf bract.  Multiple shoots grow from base.  Bark coarse, interlaced ridges, corrugated.  Good carving wood.
