Pinnately compound leaves, alternate, entire, base of petiole swollen because bud inside.  Leaflets deciduous, fall off petiole before rachis does.  Paired stipular spines on twigs.  Legume.  Bark is light gray to black, narrow rigdes and wide fissures.  Can tell them from honey locust based on shorter thorns and pod, and longer leaves with larger leaflets.  Fabaceae.
