| Easily distinguished from other squirrels by the loose fold of skin
between the legs, which this species uses to glide form tree to tree.
Otherwise, looks like a small (8"-11") tree squirrel with grayish-brownish
upperparts and white underneath. The souther flying squirrel is found
throughout the eastern half of the U.S. and in parts of Mexico. It
lives in heavy, deciduous timber, and tends to den in tree cavities.
They primarily feed on nuts, berries, and seeds but also take insects occassionally.
They are completely nocturnal. |
