Fox Squirrel

A large tree squirrel (19"-29") with a very bushy tail.  Reddish-yellow color, larger size, and square face distinguish it from the Eastern gray squirrel.   Color is often variable.  Found throughout the eastern half of the U.S., living in mixed hardwood forests.  Fox squirrels are often observed near farmland as well, whereas gray squirrels are rarely found in such habitat.  Fox squirrels nest in tree cavities or leaf nests, which you have probably seen, and feed on a variety of nuts, seeds, berries, and corn.
