Eastern Cottontail

This is a medium-sized (14"-19") mammal with long ears, large hind legs and feet, a short fluffy tail, and soft fur.  Color varies a bit, but usually grayish brown on top and whitish underneath.  This species is distiributed throughout the eastern and midwestern U.S., as well as much of the southwest.  They live in all types of habitats, but prefer open brushy or forest border habitat.  Cottontails feed almost entirely on plants, especially green succulents, and provide an important prey source for many raptors and mammal predators.
