Eastern Chipmunk

A small ground squirrel, reddish brown with conspicuous lengthwise strips on the back, sides, and cheek with cheek pouches for carrying food.  They are found throughout the eastern half of the U.S.  Chipmunks prefer to live in timber borders rather than deep in the forest.  They create burrow systems by digging, but spend much of their time on the surface feeding.  They feed primarily on plants, especially nuts, seeds, and berries, but occasionally take an insect or two.  An important prey species for many preditors.
