| 0.75”-1.5” long, tan to brown to gray, with a characteristic dark X on back (best field mark). Large toe pads. Voice: high-pitched ascending whistle (peep!). Found in wooded areas in or near ponds. Breeds March to June with the start of warm rains, one of the first signs of spring. Nocturnal. |
