| 2.5"-5.5" long, tan to dark brown above, plain or mottled; some show blotches, sometimes fused into a stripe. Pattern becomes obscured with dark pigmet in older individuals. Pale line from eye to angle of jaw is a distinguishing characteristic. Tail is triangular, sharply keeled, and compressed. A streamside salamander, often found near or in streams, occasionally in sloughs or mucky sites. Lays eggs near a stream beneath rocks or rotting logs, so that larvae can hatch and fall into water where they complete development. Feeds on worms, insects, etc. |
