Webtext for The Legal Environment of Business

Welcome to the Internet-assisted format for LST 240, The Legal Environment of Business. In this course students learn about the interplay of law and business, how the law affects business life, and the role of law as an expression of the will of society. Because the interaction of law and business is both broad and deep, LST 240 is part of the core knowledge which all business students must master.

In a typical course on law and business, students purchase an expensive, thick textbook (only a portion of which is covered in class), attend lectures at which the professor discusses legal principles and caselaw, and take periodic tests. In this Internet-assisted version of the course, the stress will be on active student involvement in learning. Student participation in class will determine part of each student's grade in the course. Students are expected not only to be prepared before class meetings and to take part in class discussions, but they are also expected (gasp!) to conduct independent research to round out their knowledge. This Website is full of tips on places to go for additional information on each topic. It is expected that students will come to class thoroughly prepared to take part in classroom give-and-take.

The course will be divided into a number of bite-sized pieces. Students will read cases and other legal materials prior to coming to class. Class sessions will consist of discussions of legal principles illustrated by the cases and other materials the students have read as well as cases presented by the professor. This Webtext provides basic legal principles, cases for discussion, research assistance, sample test questions, and other useful information to help assure student success.

It is recommended that students peruse this entire Website before beginning the first lesson. Get a "feel" for the site, the course material, and the types of assistance provided. And remember, your instructor is never further away than your keyboard!
