MESSAGE: 12/12 (LAST ONE!)

The course is over, the final grades are in!

The final exam turned out so-so and I added 5 points to the scores.  See scoreboard for all the information, including the distribution of the final grades.

The grade computer has been updated.  If you want to use it, you will need your final exam grade, which you can get from me.  Solutions to the final exam are posted.

I enjoyed teaching the course and wish you luck in all your future endeavors.  Happy holidays to everyone!

MESSAGE: 12/6

The final exam is on Tuesday at 8:00AM in our usual classroom. The final exam is comprehensive and will be 50% longer than our usual exams (its value is 50% more) - thus, 6 pages instead of 4, about 90 points instead of 60.  You should have plenty of time: 2 hours.  The final exam will be 1/3 from chapter 5, 2/3 from the rest of the material through the semester.  Make sure you know how to do all the problems on previous exams and quizzes, since many of the problems on the final will be very much like them.

Special office hours: Mon, 9:30-11:30AM.
Review session in our usual classroom: Mon, 2:00-3:00PM.
Come with questions.  If the classroom is occupied, I will leave a note where we are.

M
ake an appointment with me if you cannot make it during any of the listed times, .

MESSAGE: 11/26

Exam 3 turned out OK, but could have been better.  We are adding 3 points to the score to account for the rush in covering the last section.  Grade computer has been updated to reflect exam 3.  We won't have any more quizzes, so only the final grade is left to be incorporated in your score.

New homework is posted.

MESSAGE: 11/20

Exam 3 has been moved to Friday, 11/22.  We are still covering the same material (see last message).

MESSAGE: 11/15

Homework is posted now for all the sections that will be covered by Exam 3.  The amount of material that I want to cover from sections 4.1,4.3 and 4.5 is not large and we should be able to do it in time for the exam (those sections will basically be learning to graph quadratic, polynomial and rational functions).

I don't think we will be able to cover all 3 sections in one class, so, to leave one class for questions and review, it looks like we will have to move the exam to Friday.  We will discuss this on Monday.

Quiz 7 turned out OK.  The solution sheet is posted.

MESSAGE: 11/12

Quiz 7 is on Thursday over sections 3.5 and 3.6.  Exam 3 has been set for Thursday, 11/21.

MESSAGE: 11/8

Homework is posted through 3.7.  Make sure you look over 3.5 and 3.6 for next week.

Let's start thinking about the 3rd exam.  How about the week before Thanksgiving, say, on Thursday (that's a day short of two weeks from today)?

MESSAGE: 11/5

New homework is posted, athough we haven't started this section.

We will not have a quiz on Thursday, as we haven't covered enough material since the exam.

MESSAGE: 11/1

Exam 2 turned out OK.  Solutions can be found on the 'Solutions Stash' page.

New homework is posted in section 3.5.  We will cover another section before we look over homework.

Grade computer has been updated to reflect exam 2.

MESSAGE: 10/25

Exam 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, 10/29.  It will cover sections 2.3-2.6 and 3.1-3.4 (that is, sections over which homework is posted on the homework page).  Calculators will be allowed.

Quiz 6 turned out pretty well.  Solutions are posted on the 'Solution stash' page.

On Monday, we will look at some problems from 3.3 and 3.4.  Study these sections over the weekend and come with questions.  Come with questions over any other section as well, as we will do a bit of review, too.

The grade computer has been updated so it reflects 6 quizzes into account.

MESSAGE: 10/22

We are having a quiz on Thursday over sections 3.1 and 3.2.  No calculators.

Exam 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, 10/29.  It will cover sections 2.3-2.6 and 3.1-3.4.  We should finish 3.3 and 3.4 this week.

MESSAGE: 10/17

Hope everyone is having a nice fall break!  New homework is posted, in case you want to look ahead.  We are going to get to those sections next week.

MESSAGE: 10/15

New homework is posted.  We'll go over 3.1 and 3.2 on Thursday.

Let's tentatively set the date of Exam 2 for Tuesday, 10/29.

MESSAGE: 10/11

The quiz turned out pretty well (see 'Scoreboard').  Next week, no quiz (yippee!).

New homework has been posted.  You should get started on it this weekend.

MESSAGE: 10/9

We are having a quiz on Thursday.  Sections covered are 2.5 and 2.6.  (Sorry for lateness in updating this page.)  Calculators are allowed.

MESSAGE: 10/4

We will look at some of the homework from 2.5 and 2.6 next week, so you may want to get started on those problems (already posted) this weekend.  Also, bring a calculator to class on Monday.

The grade computer is now operational.  Try it!

MESSAGE: 10/1

Exam 1 did not turn out very well.  What's up, people?  I didn't think the problems were that hard.  Most of you are studying, but it seems not enough.  A smaller number is not studying and this group really needs to start looking at homework.  I have decided to add 5 points to your test scores so that this test doesn't have such a disastrous effect on your grade.  Exam solutions are posted on the 'Stash' page.

We are having a quiz over 2.3 and 2.4 on Thursday (no calculator).  This section is fairly easy and it's a good chance to get a good grade easily.

Homework is posted up to 2.6 (but we are only coming to that part).

MESSAGE: 9/27

Homework is posted for 2.3 and 2.4.  We will look over some of it on Monday or Tuesday.  Previous assignments are under 'Old homework'.

Exam 1 will be returned on Monday.

MESSAGE: 9/24

Thursday, 9/26, is our first exam, covering 1.3-1.7 and 2.1, 2.2.  Problems on it will be like those done in class or given for homework and  quizzes.  Bring a calculator, since you will be asked to evaluate expressions like in Quiz #2.

Among word problems, the ones most likely to appear on the exam are geometry, mixture, investment and constant velocity problems.  There will be one of such problems on the test.

For help see me during office hours (see 'Contact info').  If you can't make it during the specified hours, you can make an appointment.

The scoreboard has been showing wrong scores (of another class I am teaching).  I fixed this so the numbers are correct now.  If you have visited this page before, please do it again to get the correct information.

MESSAGE: 9/20

Uh-oh - Quiz #3 turned out really poorly (see 'Scoreboard').  It was a little difficult, but it seemed a lot of people were making elementary mistakes.  We'll go over it in class on Monday and you should look over the solutions (see 'Solution stash') over the weekend.  Also, look at homework in 2.1 and 2.2 so that we may discuss it next week.

Don't forget the exam next week on Thursday, 9/26.  It will cover 1.3-1.7 and 2.1,2.2.

MESSAGE: 9/17

We'll have a quiz over sections 1.6 and 1.7 on Thursday.  No calculators.  Our first exam, covering sections 1.3-1.7 and 2.1-2.2 is scheduled for Thursday, 9/26.  If you are having trouble with the material, now is the high time to come to see me for help.

Check out the solutions of the calculator quiz in the 'Solution stash'.  If you had errors, look at the solutions to make sure you know how to enter the expression properly.

New feature!  Check how the class did on quizzes on 'Scoreboard'.   Also, check the schedule for free tutoring under 'Free tutoring'.

Homework is posted up to 2.2
.

MESSAGE: 9/13

Homework up to 1.7 is posted.  Look over the problems in 1.6 and 1.7 this weekend as we will do some of them in class next week.

We should start thinking about our first exam as well.
Let's aim for week after next, either Tue or Thu.

Solution to quiz 1 has been posted.  Quiz 2 is coming soon.  Check "Solution Stash" at left.

MESSAGE: 9/10

We'll have a quiz on Thursday over using the calculator to evaluate expressions.  Thus, bring the calculator.  You will be asked to evaluate several expressions like we did in class.  Some sample problems may be found by clicking here.  (You will need Acrobat reader in order to read this document, get it here).

Start looking over homework for 1.6, we plan to discuss some of those problems on Thursday and/or Friday.

MESSAGE: 9/6

New homework is posted.  We haven't yet arrived at this section, but I am putting it on if anyone wants to look over the problems in advance over the weekend.

I did not have the quizzes graded for today - sorry!  Expect to see them on Monday.

MESSAGE: 8/30

Our first quiz is on Thursday, 9/5!  It will cover sections 1.3-1.5.  Calculators are not allowed (and wouldn't be of any help, anyway).

New assignment has been posted.

MESSAGE: 8/27 (SCROLL DOWN FOR PREVIOUS MESSAGES)

I expect to post to the website on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.  Thus, check for new assignments Tuesdays and Fridays later in the afternoon.  You should start working on an assignment once we've finished the section in class.

Office hours have been posted.  If many people are unhappy with the posted schedule, they may be altered.  They are effective immediately.  The only exception is Wednesday (8/28), when I am out of town and will not have an office hour.

Our first quiz is next week, most likely on Thursday.

Only few people have introduced themselves to me so far.  Please stop by at the end of class and let me know your name.
