Home, 5/30 (last message)

The semester is over and the final grades have been in for quite a while now. On the "scores and docs" page, you can see distribution of the final letter grades, and find all the exams we had during the semester, along with their solutions. (Only one person took the final exam, so I am not publishing the breakdown in scores.)

The final grades came out really well, best among all my Mathematical Reasoning classes so far: half the class got A's! Unfortunately, there was an uncharacterstically high number of E's, exclusively due to the usual reason: not showing up for class.

I thoroughly enjoyed teaching this class, and am happy it produced a lot of engagement by the students. Thank you for your participation!

Have an enjoyable summer!

Exam 3 turned out decently, although it could have been a little better.

The final exam is scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 in our usual classroom. It will have six pages and consist of problems like the ones on the exams during the semester. Therefore, to start preparing for it, make sure you can do all the problems on the four exams we have had. Solutions to all of our exams are available. Also, check out the sample final exam on the "scores and docs" page. No one should have any problem finishing the exam, since it is 50% longer than a usual exam, but you get twice the time.

If you opt to take the final exam, turn in any missing homework to improve your chances of getting a better grade.

Office hours schedule Monday-Thursday:
Monday by Zoom only
Tuesday 10:00-2:30, Wednesday 10:00-2:00
Thursday 9-10:30, 12:30-1:30
To attend office hour by Zoom, send me an email first, so I can start the meeting.

Good luck on finals!

Exam 3, covering sections 5.1-5.3 and 6.1-6.3 is scheduled for Friday. Check out sample exam 3 for some representative problems. By Saturday evening after the exam, you will receive your overall grade in the class so you can decide whether to come to the final exam to attempt to improve it.

Homework for sections 5.3 and 6.1 is due on Monday.

We discussed homework in section 6.2 today and will finish on Monday, after which we will cover our last section 6.3.

Exam 2 turned out well. See the scores and the solutions on the "scores and docs" page.

After exam 2, relax a little. And work on homework in sections 5.1 and 5.2, for we will discuss it on Monday.

Home, 4/7

Today we finished homework discussion for homework in sections 4.1 and 4.2. This homework is due on Monday.

Exam 2, covering 3.1-3.5, 4.1 and 4.2 is schedled for Friday. Students typically get lower averages on this exam, so study hard: make sure you do some problems from the book that are not on the write-up homework to increase practice amount. Check out sample exam 2.

On Monday, we start with section 5.1.

Home, 3/31

Today we finished sections 4.1 and 4.2 and started discussing homework from 4.1. On Monday, we will continue this discussion, which will likely spill over to Wednesday, with homework from sections 4.1 and 4.2 due on Friday.

Exam 2 is anticipated for Wednesday in the week after next.

Can you believe it? March is already over! Five weeks of classes to go, and we'll be done sooner than you think!

Home, 3/17

Today we finished section 3.5 and started discussing homework from it. We will conclude on the Monday after spring break. Section 3.5 will be due on its own on the Wednesday after spring break.

After we cover sections 4.1 and 4.2, we will have exam 2, during the second or third week after spring break.

Have a good spring break! Get some rest, do some work.

On Monday, we will finish discussion of homework in section 3.4, so homework for sections 3.3 and 3.4 will be due on Wednesday. If there is time left, we will start with section 3.5.

Exam 1 turned out well! Good job, class! You can find class statistics and exam solutions on the "scores and docs" page. Your current overall grades are now on Canvas. Complacent, however, become not, as exam 2 is significantly harder than exam 1.

We finished discussion of homework for sections 3.1 and 3.2, so those sections are due on Monday.

On Monday we will continue with lectures over section 3.3.

Home, 2/24

On Monday we will finish section 3.2 and then start homework discussion of sections 3.1 and 3.2. The anticipated due date for those homeworks is Friday.

Home, 2/17

Exam 1, covering sections 1.1, 1.2, 2.1-2.4, is scheduled for Wednesday. Check out sample exam 1 on the "scores and docs" page to see some representative problems.

On Monday we will cover some new material and then devote some half of class to questions you may have on the exam.

Home, 2/10

Homework discussion over sections 2.3 and 2.4 will begin on Monday. Depending on how far we get on Monday, the write-ups will be due on Wednesday or Friday.

With chapter 2 completed, it's time for an exam, but not next week. I anticipate it taking place during the week after next.

Home, 2/3

Homework discussion over section 2.2 will finish on Monday, the write-ups for 2.1 and 2.2 are due on Wednesday.

With leftover time on Monday, we will continue discussion of material from chapter 2.

If you need help, you can always come for office hours. You can also get help at the Ross Center. Free tutoring information has been updated with current semester schedules, see "free tutoring."

After we finish chapter 2, we are planning an exam, but not next week. (We still have to cycle through homework in sections 2.1-2.4.) With that in mind, sample exams have been posted on the "scores and docs" page.

We nearly finished section 1.1 today. Once we finish it on Monday, we will work on homework in section 1.1, so take a look over it this weekend.

Nothing will be due until we have worked on homework in section 1.2.

Welcome to the course! Look around to familiarize yourself with the layout of these webpages. To get to other pages, click on the links in the menu (or drop-down, if viewing on a smartphone). The most often-used pages are in the first line of the menu (or the first several choices of the drop-down). "Scores and docs," for example, has all the documents for the course.

Your first exercise is to find the syllabus on these pages and read it. The items there that are typically of greatest interest to students are from "Homework" to "Make-ups."

These pages will get more content as information becomes available. Check back often: useful information is provided in the "home" section (which you are reading), typically updated weekly. For now, here is some information on Canvas and lecture notes.

Canvas: Canvas will mainly be the repository of class notes and your grades. Information about the course and weekly messages will be posted to this website (also accessible from Canvas). (Why bother with the website outside of Canvas? Two reasons: it's easier to make updates to it, and it stays public, something I value, and you may grow to as well, as a service to future students of this same course.)

Lecture notes: Have these with you so that you can follow the lectures in class without having to copy a lot. Because there aren't many students in this class, I will print them for everyone. Blank ones are on the "scores and docs" page if you need an additional copy, or you want to write on a tablet. Notes written in class are on Canvas.

Homework submission: will be via paper, a change if you have recently taken a course with me.
