1/11 (last update, belated)
The course is over, the final grades are in! You may view all the course statistics, including final grades, on the "scores and docs" page. All the exams are available there as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed teaching this course, and I hope most of you did, too. Special thanks go to students who were active in class - your participation keeps the class lively, lets me keep track of what problems you are having and makes my work easier!
Hope your break was good and that you have a good spring semester!

Exam 3 turned out pretty poorly. Either everyone is having a hard time with the material, or did not have time to prepare. In any case, everyone could use some more review of measure theory, especially in light of MAT 726, which some of you will take.
Therefore, I have decided to have the final exam only over measure theory, sections 2.1-2.6 in the book. So, it will be something of a redo of exam 3. Test knowledge will be the test knowledge that comes from sections 2.1-2.6. To start studying for the exam, make sure you know how to do all the problems on exam 3, as the final will be similar. I may take away some "popular" problems, or add some new ones. The final exam will be on Friday at 2:30 in our usual classroom.
Office hours for next week are:
Good luck on final exams!
Exam 3, covering sections 2.3-2.6, is scheduled for Friday, 12/4 at 2:30 in our usual classroom. Homework for section 2.5 and 2.6 and test knowledge has been posted (note that a couple of items in test knowledge refer back to some essential things in 2.1 and 2.2).
Hope you are having a lovely Thanksgiving!
Homework for section 2.4 will be discussed on Tuesday.
Due to comprehensives taking place during the last week of class, it seems best to have exam 3 on Monday of finals week.
Homework for section 2.3 will be posted later today - we will discuss this section on Tuesday.
Exam 2, covering 1.3, 1.4, 2.1 and 2.2 is scheduled for Tuesday. We will meet on Monday at 2:30 for a 1-hour review session ahead of the exam, where I will return the most recent homework. Test knowledge has been posted.
Homework for sections 2.1 and 2.2 is posted - we will discuss both on Tuesday. Note that homework for 2.1 includes some more problems from section 1.4 (on the Problem Farm sheet), since I felt that you could use more problems about the material in the section.
Exam 2, covering 1.3, 1.4, 2.1 and 2.2 is scheduled for Tuesday of week after next (11/10) - we'll plan on a review session on the preceding Monday.
Homework for section 1.4 is now posted - we will discuss it on Tuesday.
We should start thinking about exam 2 - perhaps week after next?
Homework for the newest sections will be posted next week.
Homework and notes for section 1.3 has been posted (third page on problem farm).
Exam 1 turned out so-so, but there were some good grades.
Exam 1, covering sections 8.1-8.4, 1.1, 1.2 is on Tuesday. Test knowledge has been posted. Expect problems like those on homework or discussed in class. We will meet on Monday at 2:30 in our usual classroom for any discussion ahead of the exam, and to return homework in 8.4.
Write-ups for 1.1 are due on Tuesday. For those that may find it useful while writing, I've posted the scan of my notes for section 1.1 on the "scores and docs" page.
We are planning exam 1, covering sections 8.1-8.4, 1.1, 1.2 for Tuesday, 9/29. I'll try to have a test knowledge file soon.
Write-ups for 8.3 and 8.4 are due on Tuesday, and we'll discuss homework over 1.1 on Thursday.
Let's start thinking about an exam.
Write-ups for 8.2 are due on Tuesday, and we'll discuss homework over 8.3 and 8.4 on Thursday.
Have a good Labor Day long weekend!
In order to accomodate the many people who are taking comprehensives next week, we will discuss homework from 8.2 on Thursday, and it will be due the following Tuesday.
We will discuss homework from 8.1 on Tuesday, and this homework will be due on Thursday.
Welcome to the course! Things will be run pretty much like last semester. The beatings will continue, especially on Thursdays, albeit with increased intensity.
