The course is over and the final grades are in! Almost everyone who came to the final exam for a better grade, did indeed improve their score. You may see final exam and final grade statistics on the usual page.
Thanks to everyone for being such a great class! Special thanks to people who participated in class: this is always a great deal of help when I teach.
Everyone have a great break!
Exam 4 turned out pretty poorly (worst so far, as a matter of fact). What happened? Probably the end-of-the-semester rush combined with a lot of trigonometric formulas that had to be mastered in a short amount of time.
The final exam is on Tuesday, 12/12 at 8AM in our usual classroom. The final exam is comprehensive and will have 6 pages (70 points, with two hours to do it). Expect problems like on previous exams and worksheets, so the best way to prepare for it is to make sure you can do all the problems on the previous exams.
Previous exams and their solutions can be downloaded blank on the "scores and solutions" page. You are strongly encouraged to work on the blank sheets first and then check your answers against the solutions.
Recall that the final exam grade replaces your weakest exam grade only if it is better, so you will have at least the grade you have earned so far, regardless of your final exam score. Therefore, if you are considering whether to come to the final, there is nothing to lose.
Office hours for next week are: Monday-Wednesday 11:00-1:00, Thursday, 9:00-1:30. Come to see me if you need help.
Good luck on your final exams!
Our last exam is scheduled for Thursday, 12/7. It will cover 6.3, 6.5-6.7, 7.1-7.5, 7.6, 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3. Remember that if you do well, you need not take the final exam!
Solutions to all the worksheets so far are now on the usual page.
Exam 3 turned out OK (but could have been better). That's just logarithms for you - always giving people trouble. Scores and solutions for exam 3 are on --- guess which page!
Worksheet 8 was handed out today and is due on Tuesday, 11/21. If you'd like one before Monday, email me. Homework is now assigned through 6.7.
The end of the semester is upon us, with just two weeks of classes remaining after the break. Our last exam will be on Wednesday or Thursday of the last week of classes. Recall that if you are happy with your grade based on the four exams, you don't need to take the final. The comprehensive final exam will replace the lowest of your exam grades, if it is better.
After the exam, everyone can take a breather this weekend!
We covered 6.3 on Friday - only this is assigned for homework.
Exam 3 is scheduled for Thursday, 11/9. It will cover 4.1-4.6, 4.8 and 6.1-6.3. A sample exam is available on the "scores and solutions" page.
Worksheet 7 is due on Monday.
As the semester draws to a close, people are more and more interested in their grades. Check out the grade computer page (have your test and worksheet grades ready...)
Oops! Looks like I forgot an update last week... but it was right after an exam, so there wasn't much to report. Exam 2 turned out rather well, especially when the extra points were added.
Not much to report this week: homework has been assigned up to 4.4 - next week we start with 4.5. Exam 3 is most likely coming after next week (once we finish with 6.3). Check out the grade computer to see how well you are doing based on two exams and worksheets.
Exam 2 is scheduled for Wednesday, 10/18! It will cover sections 2.2-2.7 and 3.1-3.4.
On the "scores and solutions" page you can find solutions to worksheets so far, blank worksheets (for practicing) and a sample exam. Avail yourselves to these.
Don't forget to come and seek help during office hours if you are having trouble with anything!
Homework is assigned up to 2.7. We will cover sections 3.1-3.4 before our next exam, which you should expect the week after next (around 10/16).
Another worksheet will be given next week. Until then, have a nice fall break!
Exam 1 turned out well! Good job, class! You may view the statistics and get the solutions on the "scores and solutions" webpage.
If you didn't do as well as you'd hoped, try stopping for office hours. A lot can be cleared up in just a little time. For other help opportunities, see "free tutoring".
Try the grade computer to see what your score is now overall!
Homework is assigned up to 2.5 now. I handed out a worksheet on Friday, due Wednesday next week.
After our exam today, everyone can take a little break.
Homework is assigned up to 1.6, with Worksheet 3 due on Wednesday. Some people had substantial trouble with worksheet 2. Please come for help on this stuff.
Next week, we are planning Exam 1, to cover chapter 1, on Thursday or Friday (9/21 or 9/22). Stay tuned for further info.
A sample exam from a previous semester (check Exam 1) can be found on the "scores and solutions" page. Solutions to this exam can be found elsewhere (find it, internet sleuths!).
Solutions to worksheets given in this class are also available on the "scores and solutions" page.
Homework is assigned up to 1.3 now. Make sure you practice on enough of the word problems, since those give students the most trouble. Worksheet 2 is due on Wednesday.
Awright, we've made it through the first week!
Homework is assigned up to 1.2 now. The first worksheet was due yesterday, but can still be turned in after the long weekend (albeit with a small penalty for lateness). If you didn't even get the worksheet, email me and I'll send it to you.
Have a great long weekend, everyone!
Welcome to the course! Look around to familiarize yourself with the layout of the webpage. Note that the most important links are highlighted.
These pages will get more content as the semester progresses. Check back often: useful infomation is provided in the 'home' section (which you are reading), typically updated weekly. Homework assignments will be updated when we start a new chapter.
