Dr. Mulligan is Professor of History and Director of the Forrest C. Pogue Public History Institute at Murray State. He is a graduate of Assumption College and has his A.M. and Ph.D. from Clark University.
He describes his public history experience as follows:
From 1974-1975 I was historian for the town of Northborough,
Massachusetts. While there I wrote a pamphlet and a book, Northborough: A Town
and Its People, the scripts for a reenactment and a pageant (unproduced),
and taught in the community education program.
From 1977 to 1982 I was assistant to the director of the Regional Economic History Research Center, Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation in Wilmington, Delaware. While there I organized eleven conferences, edited twenty issues of a Working Papers series, supervised a research project that lead to the publication of Canals and Railroads of the Mid-Atlantic States 1800-1860, participated in a major travelling museum exhibit, assisted with grant work, and helped administer a research fellowship program.
From 1983 to 1989 I was director of the Clark Historical Library at Central Michigan University. While there I organized three conferences and a number of lecture series, founded the Michigan Historical Review, was responsible for publishing four books, tripled the CHL endowment and significantly increased its annual giving, received two direct appropriations from the state legislature, established the Wilbert Wright Collection of African and African American History, worked with more than fifty local historical organizations on newspaper microfilming and other historical projects.
From 1989 to 1993 I was a freelance historical consultant based first in Mount Pleasant and later in Negaunee, Michigan working with local governments and historical organizations.
In 1993 I joined the faculty of Murray State University. In May 1997 I was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor. I was promoted to full professor in 2002.
