On the first day of lab, each student will be asked to sign a copy of Laboratory Directions for Chemistry Students. This signed copy will be turned in to your laboratory teaching assistant (TA). You should keep a second copy of this sheet in your lab manual or lab notebook.
You will also be asked to check the equipment in your lab drawer, and fill out an equipment check-in sheet. It is important that you make sure each item is clean and in good condition. If any item is missing or damaged, it will be replaced free of charge during this first lab session at the stockroom. It is NOT acceptable to put "0" in a column if it is missing. At the end of the first lab period you should have exactly the equipment listed, in the designated quantities.
Your TA will check your equipment at the end of the semester, and you will be charged for any items that are broken, missing, or unusable for any other reason.
On the check-in sheet, please take care to complete all sections. This includes your course and section number, your name, and your student ID. If you don't know your room number, ask your TA. General Chemistry labs are normally held in BL 444, 459, and 462. Organic labs are normally in BL 425 and 432, while Analytical labs are normally in BL 448. The lock number is a serial number engraved on the back of the lock (it is not your combination). For the lock shown, the lock number is 412320. The desk or drawer number is located on a plastic tag on the drawer or cabinet. At the lab station shown, the number is 353.
Check your combination before leaving the lab on the first day. Sometimes the combination in the lab drawer is not the right one for your lock. If this happens, take your lock (or lock number) to the stockroom to get the combination. Be sure to keep your combination in a safe place where you'll have it each lab period.
Lock your lab drawer before leaving the laboratory! Each semester, many students leave lab drawers unlocked, and often find that items are missing when they return to lab. You will be charged for these lost or stolen items at the end of the semester!!
