Creating and Using Web Folders with the Web2 Server

The MS Web Folder Internet Publishing Utility is the most efficient way to manage files from within Front Page on your Web2 server account.  This page provides a tutorial in the installation and configuration of this software on your system.  NOTE: If you are working in the labs, this software has already been installed.  You should skip to the configuration process beginning with Step 3.

Step 1: Using Windows Update to Locate the Web Folders Utility

  • Run MS Internet Explorer.
  • From the Tools menu, selectWindows Update to reach the screen below.
  • Click on Product Updates

Step 2: Downloading and Installing Web Folders

  • From the resulting Product List, look under the Internet Authoring heading to find the entry for the Web Folders Internet Publishing Utility.
  • Check this entry and click the Download button at the top of the page to begin the automated download and installation process.  You will be prompted to restart your system for the software to become functional.

Step 3: Creating a Web Folder for your Web2 Account

  • Run Windows Explorer and scroll to the bottom of the resource listing until you find the Web Folders icon
  • Double-click on this icon to open the Add Web Folder option in the right window

  • Click on the Add Web Folder icon and enter the appropriate information in the resulting wizard's dialog boxes.  The following information is for a student named Ann Mason with an ID # of 2468 (This is usually the last four digits of your Social Security number.
  1. In the Location bar of the first dialog box type the following
    web2.murraystate.edu/mkt67501sp01/ann.mason/
  2. You will be challenged for a USERID and PASSWORD. Enter the following
  3. For USERID enter,  student\ann.mason (Use your first and last names)
  4. For PASSWORD enter, 2468
  5. Enter a name for the folder such as Ann's Web2 Folder and click the Finish button.  You may now access this folder just as you would a folder on your A:, C: or network drives.
  6. The folder will now appear with the name you have assigned to it as you can see on the example screen below

Step 4: Accessing your Web Folder Through Front Page 2000

  • Load Front Page 2000, from the File menu, select the Open Web option to view the Open Web dialog box.
  • Click on the Web Folders icon in the left window to see the Web Folders available to you.  Select yours from the list.
  • You will be challenged for a USERID and PASSWORD which are identical to those you used in Step 3 above.
  • Click the Open button.  You will be returned to the main Front page screen.  You now have direct access to your Web2 account and can use all the file management commands in Front Page to manipulate files in your account directly.  For example, use the File, New, Page sequence to create a home page in the site with the filename default.htm.  If you edit this page and then use the Save command, you will save your work directly to your account on the Web2 server.  You may now access your new home page from any browser by pointing it to the following URL (use your USERID in place of ann.mason).  You may also access your page directly from the Roster Page of the course website.
