Business to Business/Government eCommerce Assignment

RATIONALE

Increasingly, the Internet, and more specifically the World Wide Web, is becoming a means of establishing and maintaining commercial relationships between organizations, both business and governmental.  In this series of exercises, you will examine some of the major business to business/government eCommerce sites and assess their benefit in organizational marketing.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this exercise, you will be able to;

  1. evaluate eCommerce initiatives for business and governmental markets,
  2. describe the concepts and benefits of EDI and FEDI, and
  3. describe various approaches to electronic billing for organizations.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Financial EDI (FEDI)

EDI at GEIS A Web-based trade network facilitating EDI transactions among firms worldwide
TBA-EDI A primer and how-to guide for firm's wishing to become involved with EDI.   This site is sponsored by a consulting firm in the field.
AutoChain Online This is the automobile industry's Web-based link among supply chain firms to document the system's EDI capability.  It is part of a concerted effort to establish EDI relationships three layers down the supply chain for automobile manufacturers.  Follow the Getting Started link to get information on the project.
BoM FEDI Financial EDI services offered by the Bank of Montreal.  Follow the links under Corporate, Cash Management, Becoming EDI-enabled, options to reach the relevant material.
Harbinger This is the site for a company which offers large firms a way to engage their smaller suppliers in EDI transactions through a Web-based enrollment process.   Review the descriptions of this software which has the potential to expand EDI greatly.

Electronic Billing Systems for Organizations

Check Free This company offers electronic bill paying services to consumers.   Its products can be integrated with Quicken and other personal financial management software.
BIPS Project Information on Mellon Bank's Bank Internet Payment System (BIPS) project to allow banks to facilitate online payments by customers to several billers.
CyberCash This firm offers assistance to firms seeking to establish direct online billing service to their customers.  It discusses the advantage of this approach to billers relative to the customer-initiated approach (Check Free) or the bank-initiated approach (BIPS).
E-Money Jump station site for electronic payment topics
Merchant Masters Credit card and E-Check processing service provider
SET Explanation of the Secure Electronic Transactions (SET) system from Visa's site

ACTIVITIES

  1. Working with your team, post a message to the appropriate thread in the Course Discussion Boards in which you; a) describe the approaches of the three of the  business to business/government sites listed, b) define EDI and FEDI, explaining their benefits to organizations, and c) describe the electronic payment system you find most attractive and its marketing benefits to organizations.
